The clarity of the water in Mzima Springs is due to the fact it is underground spring water that filters up through the volcanic rock of the local Chyulu Hills. This spring water has been linked by pipeline to Mombasa, supplying most of Mombasa's water. By night the hippos graze on nearby grasslands. When they return to snooze the day away, their bodily waste fertilizes the water with vital organic matter. You might say 'yuck!' but these deposits are the staff of life to Mzima Springs. The food chain starts here: On the wildlife side - Water + Hippo poo = salts = bacteria = insects = fish = birds & crocodile etc...Water + Hippo poo = diluted nutrients = plant life = herbivores, birds & monkeys = carnivores etc.. |
