Kenya - The Kenya ReefSee the outline map of Kenya showing where the Great Reef is.
The Kenya coral reefs stretch over 500km or 310 miles of Kenya's coastline from latitude 1° 42' south to 4° 40' south. Including the tourist resort beach areas between Malindi and Mombasa. The Kenya reefs consist of over 35 hard coral genera and associated marine ecosystems including sand and sea grasses - certain areas of the inner-reef are bared to the air at low tide giving access to search rock pools and appreciate the wonder of the environment. There are about 140 different reef fish species, 10 sea urchin species and just fewer than 30 sea grass and algae. As about 70% of the coastal population of Kenya depend on tourism or fishing as their main source of income and with high poverty levels connected to an increasing population the coral reef of Kenya is an important natural resource. It has become necessary in recent years to declare certain areas of the Kenya coral reef system to be National Park Marine Reserves under the auspices of the Kenya Wildlife Service to prevent over fishing and damage to the coral base - which is already stressed in certain areas due to human pollution and river silt. Traditional fishing methods having been replaces with more catch per unit effort methods like seine netting. There are a number of licensed operators that can enter the Enforcement of restrictions on the Kenya coral reef system is now the obvious problem for the Kenya Wildlife Service as they are overstretched and there is low awareness of the closed areas by migrant fishermen with modern fishing gear.
