Kenya - Non-Tourist TravelSee the outline map of Africa showing where Kenya is. Gone is the local contentment with promoting Kenya as a destination for safari tours and beach holidays. The Kenya tourist authorities are looking towards business conferencing, cultural tours and sports as part of the global Kenya package. Travel advisories have come to the realisation that relying on just the United Kingdom and other traditional markets has left the Kenyan tourist industry exposed to a downwards spin cycle. Kenya is now in serious contest with the Far East, Asia and eastern Europe, which have been seen as a more reliable and sustainable destination for non-tourist travel. In 2006 a high powered Kenyan team comprising of government, Kenya Tourists Board (KTB) and Kenya tourism business investors were in the Balkans, Russia and Poland for a seven day promotion campaign - to market Kenya as best tourist destination and help penetrate the East African region. KTB officials consider eastern Europe as a high potential market for Kenya for new travel business. Kenya faces a daunting task of increasing awareness about Kenya in Eastern Europe through increased presence in the travel markets as well as educating local travel agents and media of Kenya as a potential destination. The other obvious challenge is to increase air access between those regions and Kenya for more eastern Europeans to travel to Kenya and enjoy the tourism experience. It is estimated that around 30 million Russians will be able to afford to visit foreign countries by year 2020 and is expected to be among the top 20 tourist source markets. At present research shows Russian tourists in Kenya spend about US$ 500 (about KSh35,000) a week on services, entertainment and souvenirs - excluding transportation and accommodation. |
