Kenya - MombasaSee the outline map of Kenya showing where Mombasa is. Mombasa is Kenya's second city. Many cargo ships and a few passenger liners call in at Mombasa, Kenya as one of the most important ports on the east coast of Africa north of Durban. With its own international airport operating flights from Europe and Asia as well as the rest of Africa. Built on an island, originally (for security) Mombasa is conected to the mainland by a causway, three bridges and and two main ferries. The most famous landmark of modern Mombasa, on Moi Avenue, Other places and sights worth seeing in Mombasa are: The Old Town and Fort Jesus, rising above the old harbour, built by the Portuguese in 1593 as a stronghold against Arab pirates and marauders. On our visit to the old town it would seem that not much had moved forward since Kenya's independence in December 1963 judging by the photo below.
