Kenya - Fort Jesus - Mombasa

See the outline map of Kenya showing where Fort Jesus, Mombasa Island is.

Fort Jesus, Mombasa, inside walls - made from quarried coral blocksFort Jesus is just one of the historic sites within Mombasa, treated now as a tourist attraction. We found that there was little preservation work being undertaken.

Fort Jesus, with its once pink coral walls guarded the old harbour, which is named Port Tudor. Tudor Creek separates Mombasa island from the Kenya mainland to the north. Modern residential sprawl and ugly industrial areas now occupy the rest of the island.

The fort was built around 1593 by the Portuguese as a defense agains Arab marauders. There was a famous siege by the Arabs that lasted nearly three years in the mid 1690s, finaly overcoming the last remaining dozen or so Portuguese defenders and their local conscripts.

Today Fort Jesus houses a museum of architectural, historic and cultural artifacts, many recovered from excavations along the coast.
