Kenya - Coast - Bamburi Beach

See the outline map of Kenya showing where Bamburi Beach is.

Bamburi beach, Mombasa, Kenya.

Bamburi beach is located on the coast of Kenya - just to the north of Mombasa with easy access from the international airport at Mombasa. Bamburi Beach has extensive white sandy beaches overlooking the beautiful azure blue Indian Ocean.

The local Bamburi Beach area is a sandy soiled area with a tropical feel, rich in baobab trees, sisal plantations and cashew-nut trees. The thick jungle to the north and in places swamp. A little way further north is the extinct river course at Kilifi Creek. On the way to Kilifi is the lost city of Jumbala Mtwapa - a long abandoned relic shrouded in jungle - Local legend has it that the Venerable Bede is supposed to have visited here. The mangrove swamps here are the seasonal roost of thousands of Carmine Bee-eaters which descend in a riot of exotic colour - an amazing and unusual sight.

Giant Tortoise at Boabab Farm, Bamburi, Mombasa, KenyaWe visited 'Baobab Farm' close to Bamburi Beach; the 'Farm' contains the eco-friendly Bamburi Nature trail which lies across the waterway that separates Mombasa island from the north coast of Kenya. The Trail is a unique development created as a result of the extraction of coral-rock deposits to supply raw material for the, now defunct, cement factory. Conservation issues are hugely important today. The area are no longer used by the factory and instead it has been naturalised. The area has been re-developed as a tourist area, covering many acres of pools, trees and indigenous grasses. Wildlife is starting to return, as well as being imported from around Kenya.

The Haller Park area contains stone walled, open enclosures with hippo, giraffe, crocodiles, impala and other animals. The Bamburi Forest Trails have some monkeys, cycle and walking trail - also a butterfly pavilion and 'Baobab Rockcraft', quite close to the Nguuni Wildlife Sanctuary, with its Ostrich farm.

Not a bad day out - a bit like Longleat without the lions - but we did manage to get 'hands-on' with a couple of giant tortoise - bless 'em.

Close by on the Malindi coast road are: The Nakumatt Hypermarket, Hong Kong Restaurant, Tembo Camp Hotel, Somak Travel, Bora Bora (hectic night spot), Whitesands Hotel (stands out from the crowd), Travellers Hotel, Severin Sea Lodge,
