Dolphin watching trip in Kisiti Marine Park

There is an opportunity for a dolphin watching trip and swimming with the dolphins off the Kenya coast in the Kisiti Marine Park. Even though on the day we went we didn't get to swim with the dolphins, as they were with young and feeding, the day was great! One of the best excursions with a great crew was on the 'Dolphin Dhow'.

A full day trip with a lunch on board of fresh local food: samosas Fresh local food: samosas with crabs and prawns, with chicken or fish, rice, chapattis, and tomato salad with a really tasty coconut sauce!with crabs and prawns, with chicken or fish, rice, chapattis, and tomato salad with a really tasty coconut sauce! There were loads of different tropical fruits, tea, coffee; local beer, wine, and a good variety of unlimited soft-drinks are available all day.

As we found out a dolphin swim depends on a calm sea and dolphins in a playful mood - we were told this is 'usually the case' with an over 60% success rate of swimming with dolphins and 95% success rate for a dolphin watching trip.

The trip took place within the Marine Reserve and we did see Even though on the day we went we didn't get to swim with the dolphins, as they were with young and feeding, the day was great!the beauty of the coral islands surrounded by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. We did see a couple of families of dolphins with young, feeding on octopus etc. and we did get to snorkel over the magnificent coral reef in the Kisiti Marine Park whose teeming aquatic life could be compared to the Red Sea.

We were made to feel special all day whilst on Dolphin Dhow's traditional Arab sailing dhow - the friendly crew was jolly and very attentive.

Our day consisted of a bumpy (Girls - wear a bra!) but scenic drive from our hotel, through coconut and cashew plantations, eventually taking us to the rural coastal village of Shimoni. Here we walked through a coconut grove to Dolphin Dhow's beach. After booking in at the office (and shop) the water taxi took us to one of two traditional Arab sailing dhows. Once we were on board we could relax, have a drink and start to take in the scenery as we left the cove.

But we can say you don’t have to swim like a dolphin to enjoy With experienced and helpful Dolphin Dhow guides in the water with you and buoyancy aids and life-rings, even the non-swimmers amongst us enjoyed the experience!the Kisiti Marine Park. On the reef an underwater paradise awaits your exploration - The reef is teeming with fish of every colour imaginable. We saw octopus, eels, corals, and al sorts of marine life - Except turtles and dolphins.
